Goblet of Fire

June 23rd, 2009

Won my first trophy! Second place (men) at Brunswick’s Lindy Hop Jack & Jill contest. Guess I have to buy an illuminated display case now. LindyLöwe. Roar.

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

Everything Remains Raw

May 28th, 2009

An interesting documentary is coming up: “Everything Remains Raw” by Moncell “ill Kozby” Durden, who shows how Hip Hop and older dance forms like Charleston are connected. Big history! The trailer is fascinating to watch, showing the same dance steps in Hip Hop and in very old black/white clips.

Frankie’s Funeral

May 7th, 2009

If you are into Lindy Hop dancing, you will have heard that Frankie Manning died at the age of 94. The funeral has been quite a swinging event, with a full big band playing and lots of smiling people dancing around the open casket. You have to see it to believe it – check out the video.

Here is one of the last articles Frankie wrote, “Dancers and Musicians – A Mutually Beneficial Relationship“. And listen to his own voice telling the story about “Frankie Manning and the Bucket Boys

Finally one interesting post that discusses how the dance was presented and that there might be concessions to a racist stereotype about black dancers being wild, raw, animalistic.
